The tip on the website seemed brilliant:
put damp sponge in the microwave for 3-5 minutes every night to sanitize it.
So, Monday night, I tried it.
I will not be doing that every night.
In fact- I will never do that again unless I want a burnt sponge, a house full of plastic scented smoke (that is still lingering three days later) and an evening of frustration (not to mention a headache from the stench).
Epic fail.
(Come to find out this is epic fail #2 of the same brand. I did not think it was possible to have two epic fails of the same nature, but my mom assures me I tried this several years ago and the same thing happened. You would think one would remember the smell and never attempt sponge sanitation via microwave ever again.)
I am grateful for a husband that encourages me to laugh at myself!

Thanks for this Jaclyn. I now know to never try this! I guess using it and throwing it is better. Can you bleach it along with the dirty dish rags? I never use the sponge because I figure you can't sanitize it. If you do find a good way to sanitize the sponge, please share with us.

When I sanitize my sponges, I only put them in for 1-1.5 minutes. And then you need to let it sit in the microwave for a few minutes so you don't burn yourself.
I've never caught them on fire.
Oh my! 3-5 minutes is WAY too long. As you know now. ;-) I've only done 30 seconds. Until I switched permanently to white dish rags. You can bleach those suckers time and again. If you get a bundle of white ribbed/textured rags, you'll have 'em for a good long while. :-) I used to be a sponge-aholic, but Matt showed me the light.
Well, I know now that 5 minutes was way too long! I have thought about switching to rags, but I never like washing dishes with rags. I just bought a big pack of sponges, too, so it would be awhile before I switch anyways!
For better, sanitary, dishwashing use a pad such as ScotchBright plain, (not attached to sponge) which dries immediately. (Do not use sponges for ANYTHING in the kitchen.
